Did You Know Aspirin Can Prevent Intestinal Cancer 

Yes, you heard it right. Aspirin being one of the most commonly used NSAIDs, is now gaining popularity among the cancer-fighting Community.

 

A research carried out at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in Munich, in Germany, debunked the protective effects of ASPIRIN on colorectal cancer.

 

Colorectal cancer also known as colon/intestinal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world. Researchers have estimated that by the year 2040, there will be around 3.2 million new cases of the culprit which we call Intestinal cancer.

For some time now, researchers have been studying how aspirin can prevent intestinal cancer.

 

How does aspirin lower the risk of colon cancer?

 

According to earlier studies, scientists hypothesized that aspirin’s anti-cancer actions were modulated by its capacity to hinder the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme.

 

In this research, a mouse model and cultured cells were employed by the researchers.

They discovered that two tumor-inhibiting microRNA molecules, miR-34a and miR-34b/c, are first produced when aspirin is taken.

 

Additionally, aspirin acts by binding to and activating the enzyme AMPK, which aids in controlling the metabolism of cells. This in turn instructs the NRF2 transcription enzyme to travel to the cell nucleus and promote the encoding of the miR-34 genes there. The transcription factor helps reduce inflammatory processes and oxidative stress in cells.

 

The results of the study demonstrated that miR-34 genes were essential for aspirin’s ability to prevent colon cancer since aspirin was unable to stop the spread, attack, and metastatic nature of cancer cells lacking miR-34.

 Precaution

To avoid fatal results, screening guidelines are established to diagnose colon cancer at an early stage, but preventing the disease from happening should be the priority.

 

But it’s crucial to remember that aspirin, like all drugs, may cause adverse effects. Bleeding of the gastrointestinal tract is the main threat associated with aspirin consumption.
