On April 27, in the vicinity of Ensenada, the Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson, along with their American buddy Jack Carter Rhoad, vanished.
The man known as “El Kekas” showed up in court on Wednesday to answer to allegations of kidnapping, but authorities anticipate filing murder charges shortly.
He hasn’t made a plea yet.
The three tourists, who were all in their early 30s, were reportedly slain while attempting to stop their pickup truck’s tires from being stolen, according to state officials in Baja California.
Six days after they vanished, their bodies—each with a gunshot wound to the head—were discovered discarded in a cliffside well, as reported by local authorities.
They also mentioned the discovery of a fourth body in the well, but it was unrelated to the case and had been there for a longer time.
Due to their purported involvement in the “forced disappearance” of the suspect, Jesús Gerardo, who is only known by his first name in accordance with Mexican law, two people have been detained.
Ari Gisel, the suspect’s girlfriend, is also being detained. Their surnames have been hidden by the courts.
During their Wednesday court appearance, Ari—who has not been charged in relation to their disappearance—was named as one of their eyewitnesses by the prosecution.
The 23-year-old told officers that on April 28, Jesús came up to her house and claimed to have done something to “three gringos,” according to what the court heard.
He told the hearing, “I killed them,” in response to her question about what he meant.
Then he showed her the new tires he had installed on her car, which the prosecution claimed were taken from the deceased surfers.
They also expressed to the court their belief that there were additional people engaged in the murders.
To identify their remains, the parents of Jake and Callum Robinson traveled from Perth to Mexico earlier this week.
Debra Robinson paid a moving homage to them on Tuesday, saying, “It’s time for us to bring everyone home to family, friends, and the waves of the Australian ocean.”
Baja California is feeling fear and fury as a result of the killings.
