Mars (The Red Planet)

Recent testimony that has created wonderful ideas and resurrected interest in space exploration is the recent confirmation of water on Mars. For many decades, people have been discussing the existence of water on Mars and reading about it in science fiction books; now, it exists.

Simply put, this stunning discovery is nothing less than a whole new era of Mars exploration and, arguably, of the colonization mission.

The Discovery of Water on Mars

Not so long ago, Mars was considered a desert-like planet without much water in the form of rivers, seas, etc. Nonetheless, in the recent few decades, as different missions elaborate on data, they gradually reveal that water is present in very forms.

From ice caps on Mars’ poles to the discovery of water, researchers have progressively reconstructed an image of a planet that was certainly once covered with oceans and rivers.

The last and the most crucial discovery is the presence of liquid water under the surface of the red planet.

Analyzing radar data recently captured by the Mars Express orbiter of the European Space Agency, scientists said they detected an accumulation of water, possibly a subglacial lake, underneath the south polar ice cap of the planet.

It would be interesting if there is some form of Microbial life in this bounded water body kept under the frozen layer of Antarctic snow and ice – which can potentially defy all odds of what is regarded as admissible living conditions.

Implications for Life

The presence of water on Mars raises one of the most tantalizing questions in science: Is it possible that there are other inhabitable planets other than our planet, the Earth? Thus, the more liquid water is found the greater the chance that some sort of microbial life may have existed at the time or maybe still exists on Mars.

In the future, other missions will involve visiting such water-containing areas to search for life and perhaps respond to one of humanity’s biggest questions.

Future Hopes for Mars

The finding of water is also important for exploring Mars directly with humans in the future. Instead of preserving water for people only, water is also sustainable for making oxygen and fuel required for the Mars journey, thus making long-term missions more probable.

This has led to space agencies as well as private firms getting into a charged-up mode with propositions for manned missions to Mars in the offing.

Some technologies are currently in existence, which are being worked on by NASA SpaceX, and other entities that could facilitate human colonization of Mars in the next few decades.

The presence of Water on Mars makes the job of establishing a Martian Colony as the start of a truly new branch of human existence, feasible.

Conclusion

That a planet known to have been once pounded by water is now occupied ergo, signifies a dramatic epoch in the exploration of space. It enhances knowledge about Mars, encourages the search for aliens, and helps humanity to come closer to the goal of colonization of Mars.

Exactly as we are beginning to approach the new space age, people would think about the possibilities as almost infinite as the sky and space.
